Barcelona midfielder Gavi will undergo surgery on his injured meniscus after conservative treatment failed, the club announced on Monday.
The 21-year-old has been sidelined since late August with persistent pain in his right knee — the same one in which he suffered a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in 2023.
Barça said the player underwent “intense sports stress tests” on Sunday, which confirmed the need for further medical intervention.
“In order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action, this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination,” the club stated.
Gavi previously required surgery in November 2023, which kept him out of action for nearly a year. While no timeframe has been given this time, fears are mounting that the influential midfielder could face another lengthy absence.
The Catalan giants also confirmed Fermin Lopez has picked up a hip muscle injury, ruling him out for approximately three weeks.
The setbacks add to Barcelona’s growing injury crisis, with Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Marc-André ter Stegen also sidelined.
Gavi’s absence leaves Hansi Flick’s side increasingly reliant on midfield options like Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Ilkay Gundogan as they aim to keep pace with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
