The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three girls involved in the brutal assault of Nancy Wilfred, a student of the Federal University, Otuoke (FUO).
The disturbing incident, which took place in Yenagoa, the state capital, went viral on social media after the suspects were seen beating, stripping, and filming the victim. They accused her of being romantically involved with the boyfriend of one of the girls.
In the shocking footage sighted online, the suspects were captured slapping, kicking, and punching Nancy before cutting off parts of her braided hair with a sharp object.
Following the public outcry, police operatives launched a manhunt and arrested the suspects on multiple charges, including assault, attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and abduction.
According to reports, operatives of Zone 16, with the support of FUO security personnel, first apprehended the prime suspect identified as Kadi, who later provided information that led to the arrest of the two other culprits.
The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police has ordered a full criminal investigation into the matter, after holding an initial session with the victim and engaging with community-based organizations and gender advocacy groups.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will undergo further interrogation before being arraigned in court.
The police command has reassured the public of its dedication to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and order across the state.
