FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday to Mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Monday in Abuja on behalf of the Federal Government. He congratulated Nigerians on the milestone and urged citizens to remain united, patriotic, and resilient — values he said have sustained the country since 1960.

Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to embrace President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a blueprint for national rebirth, economic transformation, and shared prosperity. He expressed optimism that with collective effort, Nigeria would “continue to grow stronger in peace, progress, and development.”

The minister further wished all citizens “a happy and memorable 2025 Independence Day celebration.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that this year’s anniversary would be observed on a low-key scale under the theme “All Hands on Deck.”

Speaking at the Pre-Independence World Press Conference in Abuja, Idris explained that activities began with Jummat prayers on Friday and a Thanksgiving service on Sunday. He added that the government would also unveil the National Value Charter, a framework developed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to promote national pride and responsible citizenship.

The charter outlines the commitments of government to the people, as well as the obligations of citizens toward the country.
