Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has once again faulted President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the fuel subsidy, stressing that no nation in the world operates without some form of subsidy.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana argued that even developed nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and France continue to subsidize critical sectors, including electricity and agriculture, to ease the burden on their citizens.
“There’s no way you can remove subsidy completely. No country in the entire world has abolished subsidies completely,” he said.
According to him, the policy was largely influenced by pressure from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which insisted on the removal of all subsidies in Nigeria.
Falana’s remarks add to the growing debate over the economic impact of the subsidy removal, which has triggered inflation, higher transport costs, and widespread hardship for Nigerians.
