Music icon Mariah Carey has opened up about reconciling with her late mother, Patricia Carey, before her passing in August 2024 at the age of 87.
In a candid interview on CBS Mornings with Gayle King, the superstar admitted that navigating the loss was deeply challenging given her complicated relationship with her mother.
“I don’t know how I processed it. I just know that it was extremely difficult for me to navigate,” Mariah shared. “It was tough because I have always had an interesting relationship with my mother.”
Despite their ups and downs, the singer recalled staying by Patricia’s side during her final days, which brought her some comfort.
“It hasn’t been easy. But towards the end, I was with her the whole time. So, I feel better about that. But it was tough,” she said, adding that they found healing in their last moments together. “She said a couple of things to me that were very healing for what I needed. And I felt that that was the right thing to do.”
Mariah Carey also reflected on the simultaneous loss of her older sister, Alison Carey, who passed away at 63 on the same day as their mother. “My sister, I hadn’t seen in years, and I feel really badly about that as well,” she admitted. “But that’s ’cause I tend to have a guilt complex about everything. But it’s tough. My sister had an extremely hard life.”
Beyond her family losses, Mariah Carey spoke about her upcoming album Here for It All, which features collaborations with Anderson .Paak. While she praised the Grammy-winning artist as “brilliant” and a “great artist,” she dismissed rumors of a romance, joking that their frequent handholding is simply part of a “handholding club.”
Here for It All, Mariah Carey’s sixteenth studio album, is set for release this Friday.
