Mike Tyson Quietly Settles Copyright Lawsuit Over Jay-Z’s “Murdergram”

Mike Tyson has reached a settlement in a lawsuit accusing him of illegally using the 1998 track “Murdergram” in a video promoting his November 2024 fight with Jake Paul, according to Billboard.

The case was filed just six weeks ago by Tyrone Fyffe, the producer and co-writer of the song, who alleged copyright infringement after Tyson shared a 33-second Instagram training video featuring the track. Tyson later deleted the clip, but not before the lawsuit was filed.

“Murdergram” was originally recorded by Jay-Z, with DMX and Ja Rule featured, as part of the Streets Is Watching soundtrack. Fyffe, who holds part of the copyright, argued that Tyson’s use of the song was commercial, since it was tied to the promotion of his high-profile fight. He also claimed entitlement to royalties and a portion of Mike Tyson’s reported $20 million fight purse.

While the exact terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, the case’s swift resolution is notable given how recently it was filed.

Industry experts note that while social platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow users to include licensed tracks in personal videos, commercial use requires a synch license—the kind typically obtained for ads or promotional campaigns.

With this legal hurdle cleared, Mike Tyson can now focus on his future in the ring. After facing Jake Paul in 2024, the boxing legend is set to return for a highly anticipated 2026 exhibition fight against Floyd Mayweather.

One thing’s certain: fans probably won’t hear “Murdergram” blasting during Tyson’s walkout anytime soon.
