Jose Mourinho was left fuming on Tuesday night after Benfica dropped points in a dramatic 1-1 draw with Rio Ave.
Benfica looked set to claim all three points after taking the lead in the second half, but a late injury-time equaliser denied them victory against their struggling opponents.
The Portuguese tactician pointed fingers at referee Sergio Guelho, whom he accused of influencing the outcome of the game.
“We scored a goal. If this is the new football, when goals are ruled out because a small toe steps on another small toe, I don’t like this new football,” Mourinho told reporters.
“But that’s the way it is, so we have to accept it.“We kept trying and finally got the goal, but we conceded when we can’t concede. It’s tremendously unfair and an awful result for us. It was the game that Rio Ave wanted and which the referee allowed.”
Not holding back, Mourinho also delivered a stinging assessment of the referee:
“He has no personality.”
The result leaves Benfica frustrated as they continue their push for the Primeira Liga title, with Mourinho’s post-match comments once again ensuring he dominates the headlines.
