Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has taken a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of being the one who destroyed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Abati’s remarks came in reaction to Wike’s recent warning that the PDP should not field former Anambra governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election. Wike had also advised the party against considering former President Goodluck Jonathan as a potential candidate.
Speaking on Tuesday during Arise TV’s Morning Show, where he serves as lead anchor, Abati questioned Wike’s moral authority to attack other politicians.
According to him:
“Now he is saying that if Mr Peter Obi comes back to the PDP, the PDP will be destroyed because Peter Obi doesn’t have the character, having condemned PDP as a rotten party.
But Wike is not in a position to talk about character. In fact, if he talks about character, he should first question his own character. It is Wike himself that destroyed the party.”
Abati further accused Wike of speaking “recklessly and unintelligently” about Obi, Jonathan, and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, stressing that the minister lacks the moral ground to disparage others while serving another political interest.
He also berated sections of the media for giving Wike the platform to continuously attack his opponents without balance.
“If he’s talking about the FCT, fine. But if it’s about disparaging political opponents, the media has an obligation to give them a right of reply. We should not create a situation where, for monetary reasons, the Nigerian media sucks up to a minister who is overreaching himself,” Abati added.
