Wike backs George Kelly for Rivers 2027 race amid rift with Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly settled on former Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Sources say George is expected to run on the All Progressives Congress platform, as early positioning for the next election cycle begins behind the scenes.

The decision is said to have followed a private meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday involving key political actors. Discussions reportedly focused on the current power dynamics in Rivers State and strategies ahead of 2027.

Notably, former militant leaders Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom were present, underscoring the level of consultation and coalition building around the move.

George, who previously served as Works Commissioner, is regarded as a loyal figure within Wike’s political network. His emergence is seen as part of a broader effort by the FCT minister to retain influence in Rivers politics despite his current role at the federal level.

The development comes amid a prolonged political standoff between Wike and the incumbent governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Since assuming office, Fubara has gradually distanced himself from Wike, triggering divisions within the state’s political structure.

The fallout has affected the State House of Assembly and local government administration, with both camps jostling for control and reshaping alliances across the state.

Efforts by Bola Tinubu to broker peace have so far failed to fully resolve the crisis, leaving tensions unresolved as political actors begin to position themselves for the next election.

People familiar with the meeting say backing George is part of a longer-term strategy to influence the direction of Rivers State politics ahead of 2027.

There has been no official confirmation of the endorsement at the time of reporting.
