The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve lingering issues affecting non-academic staff in universities.
In a letter dated 12 September 2025, the unions criticized what they described as the “unjust” disbursement of earned allowances to university staff, the non-payment of outstanding entitlements, and several other unresolved matters.
The letter, jointly signed by SSANU president Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU general secretary Peters Adeyemi, reminded Education Minister Tunji Alausa of a previous letter dated 18 June 2025 from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions.
According to the unions, that letter prompted a meeting convened by the Minister on 4 July 2025 to address their concerns. However, the issues remain unresolved.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the issues raised in the letter centred on: Unjust Disbursement of N50 Billion Earned Allowances; Non-Payment of Outstanding Withheld Salaries and 25/35% Salary Increments; and Renegotiation of Year 2009 FGN and NASU/SSANU Agreements,” the unions stated.
They stressed that they are left with no choice but to issue a seven-day formal notice, effective Monday, 15 September 2025. If the federal government fails to meet their demands, members will embark on a series of industrial actions, including strikes, to press home their grievances.
