The Super Eagles have been dealt a major setback ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, as star striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the crucial encounter.
Osimhen, who limped off in the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, was initially feared to have picked up an ankle injury. However, team doctors later diagnosed the problem as a shin bruise.
According to journalist Sulaimon Adebayor (Pooja), citing official NFF sources, the Galatasaray forward woke up with discomfort on Sunday morning and has been declared unfit to travel with the squad for Tuesday’s clash in Johannesburg.
The 26-year-old had only just returned to the national team setup this month after missing the Unity Cup triumph in May and the 1-1 draw with Russia. He had also seen a goal ruled out for offside before being forced off the pitch against Rwanda.
Head coach Eric Chelle will now have to reshuffle his attacking options, with Osimhen’s absence seen as a huge blow to Nigeria’s hopes of securing maximum points against Bafana Bafana.
