The Donald Trump administration has declared it will prevent FIFA from banning Israel from the 2026 World Cup amid rising international pressure.
Reports indicate that UEFA is set to vote next week on whether to suspend Israel from competitions due to the ongoing war in Gaza. It remains uncertain whether FIFA will adopt UEFA’s stance.
However, the US government has made its position clear. Speaking to Sky News, a State Department spokesperson said:
“We will absolutely work to fully stop any effort to attempt to ban Israel’s national soccer team from the World Cup.”
Israel has already contested five qualifying matches for the 2026 tournament and is still in contention, despite not having reached a major competition since 1970.
