Nollywood actress Bukunmi Oluwasina has sparked conversation after describing the popular slogan “women supporting women” as a scam, claiming that most female solidarity in the film industry isn’t genuine.
In a candid interview with BBC Pidgin, the mother of one explained that while some women in Nollywood publicly appear to support each other, their backing rarely lasts when real issues arise.
According to Bukunmi, many women find it easier to help men than their fellow women. She revealed that some would lend money to men to start businesses but hesitate to do the same for another woman.
“You know say women supporting women for Nollywood na scam. E no dey always long. Even if they support each other, we know how e dey, but we dey see the men and dem dey do am. Everybody know say woman enemy na fellow woman,” she said.
The actress noted that the issue extends beyond the entertainment industry, emphasizing that fake or short-lived support among women is a wider societal problem.
Despite this, Bukunmi acknowledged that there are many hardworking women in Nollywood who thrive without the help of sponsors. However, she lamented that their achievements are often undermined by others who suggest every successful woman in the industry must have a sponsor.
“Women dey industry wey no get sponsor, dem dey do the work, the work dey show, we know dem, we see dem and their work. But na other people wey dey under their shadow dey use am run their thing, dey water down those women effort, making it look like everybody get sponsor,” she added.
Bukunmi’s statement has since stirred mixed reactions online, with many agreeing that her comments reflect an uncomfortable truth about competition and lack of genuine support among women in Nollywood.
