American rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially begun serving his federal prison sentence at FCI Fort Dix, a low-security correctional institution in New Jersey, where he is expected to spend the next two and a half years.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that Diddy was transferred to Fort Dix early Thursday morning, completing his check-in shortly after arrival. The move follows Judge Arun Subramanian’s sentencing of the Bad Boy Records founder to 50 months in prison, with the Federal Bureau of Prisons approving his request to serve time at the New Jersey facility.

Diddy’s legal team said the location was chosen to allow him to address drug abuse issues, focus on rehabilitation, and maintain family visitation throughout his sentence.

Before his transfer, Diddy had been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since September 2024, following his arrest and the denial of bail pending trial. The MDC is known for its harsh conditions, including overcrowding and inmate violence, making Fort Dix a comparatively less severe environment.

However, despite the reduced security classification, Diddy’s attorney Mark Geragos cautioned that the hip-hop star’s safety remains a concern. Speaking on the 2 Angry Men podcast, Geragos warned that Diddy would have “a target on his back,” citing the risks of both sexual and violent assaults within prison.

During sentencing, Diddy’s team told the court that he had already experienced a near-fatal incident while in custody, alleging that another inmate had once held a knife to his neck while he slept.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Diddy’s projected release date is May 8, 2028, though that could change depending on his conduct, rehabilitation progress, and participation in prison programs.

The embattled mogul’s legal troubles have continued to dominate headlines in recent months, as multiple civil suits and criminal investigations stemming from sexual misconduct and trafficking allegations remain ongoing.
