Goodluck Jonathan Denies Linking Buhari to Boko Haram, Says His Comments Were Misrepresented
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified that his recent remarks regarding the late President Muhammadu Buhari and the Boko Haram insurgency were misrepresented by the media.
In a statement released by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan explained that contrary to circulating reports, he never suggested or implied that Buhari had any connection with the terrorist group.
The clarification followed backlash from the All Progressives Congress (APC) after Jonathan stated at the book launch of former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (rtd), in Abuja, that Boko Haram once nominated Buhari as a mediator during his administration.
According to Eze, the former president’s words were “grossly misrepresented.”
“At no time did Dr. Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram or that he supported the group in any form,” the statement read.
Jonathan’s office further explained that his reference to Boko Haram’s nomination of Buhari was only meant to illustrate the group’s manipulative and deceptive tactics during the early years of the insurgency.
The statement urged Nigerians to disregard any distortion or misinterpretation of the former president’s comments, emphasizing that Jonathan remains committed to peace, unity, and the advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
