Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to stop speaking negatively about the country, stressing that the era of Nigeria being labelled the “most corrupt country” is over.
Mrs Tinubu made this appeal on Thursday, October 2, 2025, during her two-day working visit to Gombe State while addressing the Emir of Akko, HRH Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, at his palace.
“Calling on us as Nigerians, stop badmouthing your nation. Gone are the days when they say Nigeria is the most corrupt country. You won’t hear that again,” she declared.
Highlighting the shift in international perception, the First Lady stated that Nigeria is increasingly seen as a land of opportunity.
“Even when I go abroad, when they hear you’re from Nigeria, everybody’s interested. They want to come to Nigeria. Nigeria is the next destination,” she added.
She also praised Gombe’s natural landscape, comparing it to the English countryside.
“We have to be proud. Your landscape is beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like that. You see that in the London countryside, but I’m seeing it here in Gombe and in other states too,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu emphasized that Nigerians must embrace national pride, especially as the administration works on security, education, and grassroots development. She also noted the important role of traditional and religious leaders in reshaping citizens’ outlook.
Sharing her personal motivation, she said her efforts as First Lady are driven by a desire to ensure Nigeria is better after her husband’s presidency.
“I’m 65 years old now, I pray I live long. But I’m working so hard so that when my husband finishes his tenure, me too I can walk around safely. That is what drives me,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Lamido Akko conferred on Mrs Tinubu the traditional title of Sarauniyar Yaki (Queen Warrior) of Akko Emirate, recognizing her dedication to championing the interests of vulnerable groups across Nigeria.
