Reps Move to Cap Rent Increases at 20%, Urge Investment in Affordable Housing

Reps pass tax reform bill

The House of Representatives has condemned the rising rent prices across Nigeria, calling for rent hikes not to exceed 20% of the existing amount, regardless of infrastructure improvements or other justifications by landlords

This followed a motion sponsored by Bassey Akiba, member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, titled “Need to Regulate Arbitrary Rent Increase and Protect Tenants from Exploitation.”

The lawmakers urged the Federal Government to invest more in affordable housing projects to make low-cost housing accessible and reduce pressure on the rental market.

In a related development, the House passed a resolution directing the Inspector General of Police and the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure that officers operating at checkpoints in plain clothes are properly identified and fully kitted.

Members expressed concern that the current practice of unidentifiable officers at checkpoints violates international standards and undermines accountability within the security forces.
