The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has announced a ban on the unauthorized use of its campus — including hostels and other facilities — for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators.
In a statement signed by the institution’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university expressed concern over the increasing trend of individuals shooting skits, movies, and other content on campus without proper authorisation.
According to the statement, the decision is aimed at safeguarding the university’s academic atmosphere and preventing misrepresentation of its image through unregulated productions.
“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement read.
UNILAG emphasized that it has established procedures for any recording or content creation on campus to ensure safety, orderliness, and the integrity of its academic and residential spaces.
The university directed that students, staff, and external collaborators must obtain official approval from the communication unit before carrying out any filming activities.
While encouraging creativity and responsible expression, the institution urged compliance with its guidelines in the interest of safety and collective responsibility.
The directive comes amid a growing wave of universities serving as popular backdrops for social media and entertainment content. Interestingly, UNILAG has produced some of Nigeria’s most prominent skitmakers, including Muhammed Gilmore, who earned a BSc in Chemistry in January 2024, and Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter, who graduated later that same year.
