Chioma Ahaghotu Warns Poor Nigerian Women Against Marrying Poor Men

Media personality Chioma Ahaghotu has sparked debate on social media after advising poor Nigerian women not to marry poor men, describing such unions as “a tragedy written in sweating and unpaid bills.”

Ahaghotu made the statement in a post shared on her Facebook page on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, where she expressed concern about the struggles women face in poverty-stricken marriages.

According to her, marriages between poor men and poor women often result in endless suffering, with children bearing the brunt due to lack of access to basic needs and parental care.

“If you’re a poor Nigerian woman living in Nigeria, honestly, you’re better off staying single than marrying a poor man, because you will suffer,” she wrote.

The media personality explained that in such relationships, women are forced to juggle multiple responsibilities — from hustling to support the family to taking care of the home — all while receiving little to no help from their husbands.

“The ‘poor man + poor woman’ combo is often a tragedy written in sweating and unpaid bills. Once you add children, the struggle multiplies,” she continued.
“The woman will hustle outside to contribute, then still come home to play wife, mother, cleaner, chef, and therapist, all on an empty stomach and low battery.”

Ahaghotu further criticized men who neglect their domestic responsibilities, saying:

“Meanwhile, when papa Obinna comes back home, he goes outside to nara breeze or watch football. She’ll do every chore, and if she dares to ask for help, he’ll say she’s nagging him.”

She concluded her post with a warning to young women against romanticizing poverty-based marriages, stating that times have changed:

“This is not the time of your parents. You will suffer, enh! Before you argue, ask yourself why you feel personally outraged. It’s not a good thing that two poor people go marry in 2025. Ok, na I dash you.”

Ahaghotu’s post has since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating her views on love, marriage, and financial compatibility in modern relationships.
