Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has returned safely to Abuja after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military coup. He arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday evening, November 27.
Jonathan had been in Guinea-Bissau leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, where he was monitoring last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections. His presence in the country sparked concern among many Nigerians after the military announced it had seized power, raising fears about his safety.
Those concerns were eased on Thursday evening when he was successfully airlifted out of Guinea-Bissau, marking a safe end to a tense situation.
