Netflix Eyes Premier League Rights as UK Sports Broadcasting Enters New Battle for Dominance

The UK sports broadcasting landscape is entering a major reshuffle as streaming giants and traditional networks reposition ahead of a new rights cycle.

With TNT Sports set to lose its UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League coverage from 2027, the stage is wide open for fresh competition — and Netflix appears ready to make its move.

TalkSPORT reports that Paramount+ and Amazon have already secured significant European football packages, while Sky Sports is poised to take over coverage of the Europa League and Conference League.

But the most intriguing development is the growing speculation linking Netflix to a bid for Premier League broadcast rights after missing out on European competitions.

According to The Times, Netflix recently submitted bids for global rights to the UEFA Super Cup and the Champions League in Germany for the 2027–2031 cycle.

Industry observers say this marks a notable shift in strategy, signalling Netflix’s intention to invest in premium live sports content to strengthen its global foothold.

Analysts believe Netflix may begin with a smaller, targeted package — particularly the Premier League’s popular festive fixtures — to test the market and build credibility against long-established broadcasters such as Sky Sports and TNT Sports.

A source quoted by The Times described Netflix’s arrival as a turning point:
“The important thing for football, both European-wide and domestic leagues, is that Netflix has shown for the first time that it is interested in buying rights. With Paramount entering the market, it means more competition for rights.”

The Premier League remains the world’s most lucrative domestic football league, making it a natural long-term target for streaming platforms seeking global influence.

With new bidders entering the fray, industry experts predict the upcoming rights cycle will drive valuations even higher and reshape the future of UK sports broadcasting.
