“We’re Watching” – Russia Monitoring Nigeria Amid Trump’s Threat of Potential U.S. Military Action

US Election: No plans to congratulate Trump - Russia

Russia is keeping a close eye on developments in Nigeria following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trumphinting at possible American military involvement in the country, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

At a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia was “closely monitoring this issue and calls on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms.” She emphasized that Washington should act responsibly and remain within the bounds of international law.

“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” Zakharova reiterated when asked about Trump’s recent statements.

Trump, on November 1, claimed he had instructed the Pentagon to develop ‘options for possible military measures’against terrorist groups in Nigeria, asserting that the initiative aimed to protect Christian communities. On his Truth Social platform, Trump described Christianity in Nigeria as facing an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups:

“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby designating Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern.’”

He further stated that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” pledging readiness to protect Christian populations worldwide. Trump also urged Congress to investigate the situation, directing key figures, including Congressman Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee, to report back to him.

In response, the Federal Government of Nigeria rejected Trump’s claims. President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed that the country upholds religious freedom and safeguards the rights of all faiths.

Zakharova’s statement highlights Russia’s vigilance in the matter, urging international compliance while tensions surrounding potential U.S. military options remain under scrutiny.
