Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent threat to launch military action in Nigeria, purportedly to protect Christians in the country.
In a post shared on X on Sunday, Sowore cautioned Nigerians against celebrating the remark, warning that foreign intervention has never brought peace to any nation.
“The latest threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may sound appealing to some. Still, history has shown this to be perilous,” Sowore wrote.
He argued that America’s history of military interventions in other nations demonstrates their destabilising consequencesrather than genuine protection or peacebuilding.
“The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before. They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground,” he said.
According to Sowore, Nigeria’s problems can only be solved through authentic and accountable leadership, not foreign military involvement.
“What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign savior, but legitimate, accountable leadership — one that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and ends the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation broken,” he added.
Taking aim at the political elite, Sowore maintained that real change would not come from leaders like President Bola Tinubu, nor from foreign powers.
“Trump does not care about Nigerians, not Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our deliverance will never come from abroad; it must come from within, through real leadership — not the Tinubus of this world — and national renewal,” he said.
