Trump Threatens $1 Billion Lawsuit Against BBC Over Edited Speech Controversy

Donald Trump Declares Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ Over Alleged Christian Genocide

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion, alleging the broadcaster attempted to “interfere in the presidential election” by selectively editing one of his speeches.

In a letter addressed to BBC Chairman Samir Shah and sent by Trump’s Florida-based attorney, Alejandro Brito, the legal team accused the network of “fabricating statements” in its coverage and causing “overwhelming financial and reputational harm.” The letter warned that Trump would pursue damages “no less than $1,000,000,000” unless the BBC issues a full retraction, public apology, and compensation by Friday.

The dispute centers on a Panorama documentary which allegedly removed a section of Trump’s January 6 rally speech where he urged his supporters to “demonstrate peacefully.” The controversy has already triggered high-profile resignations, including Director General Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed receipt of the legal notice, saying: “We will review the letter and respond directly in due course.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Samir Shah has apologized to Trump, acknowledging errors in judgment and expressing willingness to meet the former president in person. He also defended the corporation’s handling of editorial issues, asserting that the BBC has “published corrections, updated guidance, and taken disciplinary measures” where necessary.

Trump, responding through his legal team, labeled the broadcaster “corrupt” and accused it of “intentionally deceiving viewers.” His spokesperson told NBC that the BBC “defamed President Trump by deceitfully editing its documentary in order to interfere in the Presidential Election.”

The legal threat marks the latest escalation in Trump’s ongoing campaign against major media outlets, as he continues to position himself for another White House bid.
