The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region, citing escalating security threats and a surge in unconstitutional government takeovers.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
The emergency declaration follows a wave of coups and attempted mutinies in several West African countries — developments that have raised deep concerns about political stability and democratic governance throughout the sub-region.
According to Touray, the recent events underscore the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
The meeting brought together regional ministers to assess ongoing threats and discuss collective measures to strengthen peace, stability, and democratic resilience in West Africa.
