President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the approval of the Nigerian Senate to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a peacekeeping mission following an attempted coup in the neighbouring country.
Tinubu’s request was conveyed in a letter to the Senate, seeking consent for the military intervention aimed at helping restore order after the attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area of Cotonou early Sunday.
The attempted coup triggered heightened regional concern, prompting swift cooperation between Nigeria and Benin. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had already carried out a coordinated operation with Beninese authorities in an effort to suppress the uprising.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the president’s request as Nigeria continues to play a leading role in stabilising West Africa amid growing security and political challenges.
