Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has spoken candidly about how becoming a father motivated him to adopt a healthier lifestyle after years of living what he described as an unhealthy routine.
The 34-year-old admitted that throughout his twenties, he lived as a “pizza-eating, beer-guzzling smoker,” but said a turning point came shortly after the birth of his eldest daughter, Lyra. According to Sheeran, waking up to care for his newborn while feeling the effects of alcohol made him reassess his habits.
He explained that the experience pushed him to want to be a more responsible parent, feel physically better, and avoid health issues that could limit his ability to care for his child. The desire to stay fit, he added, also positively influenced his professional life and performances on stage.
Speaking to Men’s Health UK, Ed Sheeran said that while he still enjoys good food and the occasional drink, moderation has become key. He revealed that he began running during the COVID-19 period, completing his first 10-kilometre run despite never having previously run more than a kilometre.
Ed Sheeran emphasised that embracing healthier choices in his thirties has helped him feel stronger and more energetic, both as a parent and as a performer, while still allowing room to enjoy life in balance.
