British singer Ella Mai has spoken publicly for the first time about keeping her pregnancy out of the spotlight and prioritising her peace as she expects her son with NBA star Jayson Tatum.
In a recent interview on KissXTRA, the “Boo’d Up” hitmaker reflected on how motherhood has transformed her life, admitting that she never initially saw herself as a maternal person. Before becoming pregnant, her focus was solely on her music career.
“Now, to see this new journey, to feel this new journey, and kind of have it coincide with what I’m doing now that I’m back at work, is incredible,” Mai shared. “It’s hard work, don’t get me wrong, but I couldn’t imagine my life now that I have him without him. It’s been great.”
The singer also explained how she deliberately kept her pregnancy private despite constant public attention. According to her, maintaining privacy was a conscious decision rooted in protecting her mental and emotional wellbeing.
“Yes, there’s cameras everywhere, but if you’re intentional with the way that you move, it’s not that hard to not be seen,” she said. “I only really have to show people what I want them to see. While I was pregnant, I didn’t stay inside all the time. I went outside, I was just intentional with where I went because I knew that I wanted to keep my peace.”
Mai further revealed that she was both pregnant and postpartum while working on her Do You Still Love Me? album.
She noted that the experience deeply shifted her perspective and expressed hope that listeners can hear her growth reflected in the project.
Her comments come after she previously sparked pregnancy rumours during an appearance at a Boston Celtics game, which were later confirmed when she and Tatum debuted their baby at the 2024 Olympics.
