Nigerian govt declares Tuesday, Wednesday public holidays for Eid-il-Fitr

The Federal Government has announced public holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.

According to the announcement, Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26, 2025, have been declared public holidays for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while Thursday, January 1, 2026, will be observed as the New Year public holiday.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the Christmas season to reflect on core values such as love, peace, humility and sacrifice, which are associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.

He also called on citizens, regardless of religion or ethnic background, to pray for peace, improved security and national development during the festive period.

In addition, the minister advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious while celebrating, as he extended warm wishes to citizens for a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
