Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for referring to him by his first name, describing it as disrespectful.
Wike made the remarks on Monday while responding to questions during his monthly media parley in Abuja.
The FCT Minister’s reaction followed claims by Makinde that Wike had promised to deliver the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election—an allegation Wike firmly denied.
According to Wike, Makinde misrepresented what transpired at the alleged meeting and failed to mention key figures who were present.
“He didn’t mention the former governors of Benue, Abia, or Enugu who were at the meeting,” Wike said. “Who called that meeting? Did the President invite you? We went to see the President together and told him we were still available to work together.”
Wike insisted there was nothing unusual about the meeting, stressing that Makinde’s account was misleading.
The minister further expressed anger over Makinde calling him “Wike,” stating that it was inappropriate and disrespectful.
“That is my father’s name. He has never called me Wike before. He does not have what it takes to do that,” Wike said. “To hell with that. That is disrespect.”
Wike also dismissed Makinde’s reference to making $1 million at a young age, questioning its relevance.
“Did he pay my school fees?” Wike asked rhetorically. “Forget that he’s a governor.”
The exchange highlights the growing tension between both political heavyweights amid ongoing debates over alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
