Nollywood veteran Bimbo Akintola has shed light on why she firmly backed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last general elections.
The actress, who publicly supported Tinubu at the time, revealed that her commitment to the then-APC candidate grew stronger after an opposition supporter allegedly bullied her over her political choice. According to her, the harassment pushed her to double down on her support.
Speaking on a recent episode of With Chude, Akintola urged Nigerians to respect differing political views and stop the rising culture of online and offline bullying.
“I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because somebody annoyed me with their bullying,” she said.
“Nigerians are annoying. Don’t bully other people. We have rights to differences of opinion. You don’t like this man, cool. You prefer someone else, good for you. But don’t bully others.”
She also referenced how veteran actress Joke Silva faced severe online attacks over her political stance, noting that the inhumane comments directed at Silva influenced her decision to speak out.
“So, I made a video and said, ‘I’m also supporting Tinubu, kill me, let me see if you can change my mind.’”
Akintola emphasized that Nigerians must learn to coexist with diverse opinions:
“We need to agree that we can never agree with everybody. That’s what makes us great and beautiful. If we are all the same, life would be boring. Till tomorrow, you might not agree he was the best person for the job, but at that point, that was who I wanted and who I voted for. You can’t take my voice away from me; it’s mine.”
