President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night held talks with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as efforts intensify to address mounting concerns ahead of the union’s proposed nationwide protest over rising insecurity.
The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, brought together top government officials and labour leaders in what appears to be a last-minute attempt to engage the union before its scheduled mass action.
Among those present were the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State; Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The labour delegation was led by the President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The discussions come just a day before the NLC’s planned protest slated for December 17, which is expected to draw nationwide participation over growing security challenges across the country.
Although no official statement has been issued on the outcome of the meeting, sources suggest that the talks may have centred on preventing the protest and exploring possible areas of consensus on pressing national issues.
The development follows the NLC’s strong position earlier in the week that there would be “no going back” on the planned demonstration, highlighting the urgency of the concerns being raised by organised labour and the need for meaningful engagement.
