Ex-Man United Jesse Lingard terminates contract with South Korean club

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Jesse Lingard has reached an agreement with FC Seoul to terminate his contract at the end of the 2025 season, bringing his two-year stint in South Korea to a close.

Lingard, 32, joined the K League side in February 2024 in a surprise free transfer and has since become one of the most high-profile signings in the league’s history. He made 66 appearances, scoring 18 goals and delivering 10 assists.

FC Seoul enjoyed a strong first season with Lingard, qualifying for the AFC Champions League after finishing fourth. However, they ended the recently concluded 2024–25 campaign in sixth place.

The midfielder is set to make his final appearance for the club on December 10, in an AFC Champions League match against Melbourne City.

In a statement to fans, Lingard described his time in South Korea as “unbelievable” and expressed deep appreciation for the support he received.

“After positive discussions with FC Seoul, we have mutually agreed that I will be leaving the club at the end of the 2025 season,” he said.

“This wasn’t an easy decision. The football, the atmosphere, and the passion around this club have been top-class. The love and appreciation you have shown me over the last two years has been truly amazing.”

“Playing football here has been an unforgettable experience… I’m grateful to my teammates, the staff, and everyone at this massive club.”

FC Seoul confirmed they attempted to extend his contract but said Lingard was determined to pursue a new challenge.

“His presence elevated performance, boosted the club’s brand value, and created a sensation across the K League.”

The statement added that while the club held extensive discussions to keep Lingard, they chose to respect his decision, acknowledging his leadership and commitment, including his role as captain.

“FC Seoul expresses its infinite respect and gratitude to Lingard, who has rewritten the history of the club and the K League. We fully support him as he takes on the next stage of his football journey.”

Lingard has not yet disclosed his next destination.
