Incarcerated rapper Tory Lanez has continued to insist on his innocence as he pursues a new legal challenge while serving his prison sentence.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year jail term following his 2022 conviction for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion during an incident in July 2020.
Speaking publicly on camera for the first time since his imprisonment, the rapper made the claims in an interview with NBC News filmed at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo. Tory Lanez said he believes he was wrongfully convicted and referenced what he described as newly discovered evidence that was allegedly not disclosed to his defence team during trial.
According to him, he is seeking a fair review of the evidence surrounding the case. His legal team is now preparing to approach the California Supreme Court, arguing that prosecutors failed to disclose material evidence, an alleged Brady violation.
The renewed legal effort follows a recent decision by a state appellate court, which last month upheld his conviction and dismissed an earlier appeal.
Tory Lanez also disclosed that he has filed a clemency request with California Governor Gavin Newsom. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has declined to comment, and Megan Thee Stallion’s legal team has yet to respond.
