The national leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has outlined conditions under which he would join any political coalition or form an alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso disclosed that while the NNPP is open to merging with another political party, such a party must be willing to cede either its presidential or vice-presidential ticket to him. His remarks come amid speculations that he is under pressure to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The ADC has recently attracted several high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Alhaji Aliko Dangote, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi, all of whom are believed to be eyeing the presidency.
Kwankwaso is also reportedly being courted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
However, addressing his supporters in Kano on Saturday, the former Kano State governor was firm on his stance, insisting that he would only align with a party ready to offer him a spot at the top of the ticket.
“We are looking for a party, but they must agree to give me, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a presidential or vice-presidential ticket,” he stated.
Kwankwaso came third in the 2023 presidential election, trailing behind President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi.
