The Lagos and Ogun State Governments have confirmed that British heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, on December 29, 2025.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the two state governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and painful. They prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and strength for their families to bear the loss.
The statement, signed by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, disclosed that Anthony Joshua was discharged late in the afternoon after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
According to the statement, the boxer was “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” over the death of his two close friends.
It further revealed that Anthony Joshua, accompanied by his mother, earlier visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay his last respects as preparations were underway to repatriate the remains of the deceased.
Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State also acknowledged the outpouring of public sympathy and support following the accident.
The governors expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his “fatherly support” during the difficult period and commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality care in treating Joshua and other injured persons.
