The driver charged in connection with the car crash that injured former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed two of his associates has appeared before a Nigerian court, as the boxer’s uncle questioned the need for a full trial.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Tuesday in a Sagamu court, Ogun State, over the December 29 accident involving a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his companions.
Kayode is facing charges of reckless driving and driving without a valid licence after the vehicle reportedly slammed into a stationary truck along the highway.
The crash claimed the lives of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Reacting to the case, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, said the family was grateful the boxer survived but questioned whether prosecuting the driver was necessary.
“We are very lucky that our son didn’t die. But taking this man to court is something we don’t see any reason for,” he said.
“This is my personal opinion — the trial is not really worth it. Accidents can happen anywhere in the world.”
However, he acknowledged that public opinion in the area suggested otherwise, noting that many residents believe the driver should face prosecution for overspeeding.
According to Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), preliminary investigations showed that the vehicle was allegedly travelling at high speed and suffered a burst tyre before colliding with the truck.
Kayode appeared subdued in court and avoided journalists. The judge adjourned the matter until February 25 after the prosecution requested more time.
His lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, said the adjournment was accepted in the interest of justice.
Anthony Joshua, who frequently visits Nigeria, is yet to make a public statement on the court proceedings.
