Augsburg produced a stunning upset on Saturday, coming from behind to beat Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich 2–1 and inflicting their first league defeat since March.
Defending champions Bayern took the lead through Hiroki Ito, who headed home a corner from Michael Olise after 23 minutes, setting the tone for what looked like a routine win.
However, Augsburg turned the game around in dramatic fashion after the break. Arthur Chaves capitalised on a mistake by Bayern’s stand-in goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to level the score with 14 minutes remaining.
Just six minutes later, Han-Noah Massengo completed a flowing team move to put Augsburg ahead, sealing their first win away to Bayern since 2015.
Bayern pushed for a late equaliser, with Olise striking the post deep into stoppage time, but Augsburg held firm to secure a memorable victory.
Despite the defeat, Bayern remain top of the table. The Bavarians had enjoyed a dominant campaign, recording the best opening half of a season in Bundesliga history and dropping just four points from a possible 54 before Saturday’s loss.
Second-placed Borussia Dortmund now have the chance to reduce the gap to eight points with a win away to Union Berlin later on Saturday.
