Burkina Faso Sack Head Coach Brama Traoré After AFCON Exit

Burkina Faso have dismissed head coach Brama Traoré along with his entire technical crew following the country’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations by rivals Ivory Coast.

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday, January 14, by Burkina Faso Football Federation president Oumarou Sawadogo, who said the team’s performance at the tournament fell short of expectations.

Sawadogo described the campaign as a “bitter disappointment,” noting that the national team had set a minimum target of reaching the semi-finals. He also referenced Burkina Faso’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of the rationale behind the decision.

The Stallions were knocked out after a heavy 3–0 defeat to defending champions Ivory Coast in Marrakesh on Monday. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo opened the scoring and later assisted Yan Diomande for the second goal, before substitute Bazoumana Touré sealed the win.

In the group stage, Burkina Faso secured victories against Sudan and Equatorial Guinea but suffered a loss to Algeria.

Traoré, 63, was appointed head coach in March 2024, taking over from Frenchman Hubert Véluđ, who was relieved of his duties following a round-of-16 exit at the previous Africa Cup of Nations.
