Social media platform X will make its recommendation algorithm publicly available within the next seven days, according to its owner, Elon Musk.
Musk announced the decision in a post on Saturday, describing the move as a step toward greater transparency in how content and advertisements are shown to users on the platform.
According to him, the disclosure will include the full code used to determine both organic content and advertising recommendations, allowing the public and developers to better understand how posts are ranked and distributed.
Musk added that releasing the algorithm would not be a one-time action. He said X plans to release the open-source code every four weeks, along with detailed developer notes explaining updates and changes to the system over time.
“We will make the new X algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days,” Musk wrote.
He explained that the recurring releases, combined with comprehensive documentation, are intended to clarify how X’s recommendation systems evolve and operate.
However, Musk did not specify the exact motivation behind the decision to open-source the algorithm, leaving room for speculation regarding the timing and broader implications of the move.
The announcement has already sparked discussions within the tech community, as X becomes one of the few major social media platforms to promise full public access to its recommendation and advertising systems.
