Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the legacy of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, stating unequivocally that Fela is the only singer greater than him.
Burna Boy’s comment comes amid a heated exchange between Wizkid and Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, which erupted after Wizkid’s fans compared the Grammy-winning singer to the late Afrobeat legend. The comparison reportedly angered Seun Kuti, who openly criticised Wizkid, sparking widespread debate on social media.
The disagreement quickly escalated, dividing Nigerians and celebrities alike. While some condemned Wizkid for what they described as disrespect toward Fela’s legacy, others accused Seun Kuti of overreacting and provoking Wizkid’s response.
Amid the controversy, Burna Boy offered his perspective in a video shared on Instagram by Tunde Ednut on Saturday evening. In the clip, the African Giant crooner paid tribute to Fela, saying:
“Fela is the king. He is the only one greater than me.”
Burna Boy’s statement has since drawn attention online, with many fans interpreting it as both a show of respect for Fela’s enduring influence and a reminder of the legendary status the Afrobeat pioneer holds in Nigerian music history.
