Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about how childbirth affected both her career and mental state, revealing that she once believed becoming a mother had brought her music journey to a halt.
The 45-year-old made the disclosure during an interview with content creator Korty EO, reflecting on the difficult period that followed the birth of her son.
“I thought my career was over after childbirth,” Savage said.
According to her, the physical changes she experienced after giving birth had a direct impact on her confidence and how the music industry perceived her. She recalled losing a major endorsement deal because her body no longer fit the brand’s expectations at the time.
“I felt like giving birth destroyed my career,” she added.
Beyond the professional setbacks, the singer also opened up about the emotional challenges of early motherhood. She admitted that bonding with her child did not come immediately and that she struggled mentally during the first years.
“I didn’t bond with my son for the first year or two,” she said, explaining that the experience left her overwhelmed and emotionally drained.
Savage also revealed that she had hoped to have a daughter and was deeply emotional when she was told she was expecting a boy.
Tiwa welcomed her son, Jamil Balogun, in 2015 with her former husband TeeBillz. The couple later separated but continue to co-parent.
With time, however, her perspective shifted. The singer said her relationship with her son has grown stronger, describing him as her closest companion.
“He’s my best friend now,” she said.
She added that motherhood has reshaped her values and how she raises her son, particularly in teaching him respect, responsibility, and how to treat women.
Despite the challenges, Tiwa Savage has remained one of Nigeria’s most successful music exports. With a career spanning over a decade, she has released multiple albums, toured internationally, and continues to balance global stardom with raising her son as a single mother.
