Miss Universe Nigeria, Onyinyechi Basil, has returned to the country following her participation at the 74th Miss Universe competition held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Speaking at a welcome-back reception in Lagos, Basil reflected on her experience at the global pageant, describing it as a journey rooted in purpose, resilience, and national representation rather than just a quest for the crown.
According to her, the competition offered an opportunity to redefine Nigeria’s global perception.
“I wanted the world to see that Nigerians are not just beautiful on the outside, but deeply kind within,” she said.
The 25-year-old beauty queen was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria in August after winning the national competition in Lagos among 22 contestants. She went on to represent Nigeria at the international stage, where more than 120 contestants from across the world competed.
Basil described the Miss Universe experience as demanding but transformative, citing long days, intense schedules, and constant pressure.
“You can prepare mentally,” she explained, “but it’s another thing entirely to live it.”
Although she did not clinch the Miss Universe title, Basil said she was proud of how she showcased Nigerian culture throughout the competition.
She noted that the opportunity enabled her to share stories from home, connect with fellow contestants, and showcase Nigeria’s diversity on a global stage.
She also addressed perceptions about international pageants, stating that the Miss Universe competition she grew up watching felt more transparent and open. Basil added that she has deep respect for all contestants who participated in the event.
Reflecting on the broader lessons from her journey, she emphasised that beauty goes beyond physical appearance.
“Beauty isn’t just skin deep. It’s in how you show up for others, how you use your platform, and the kindness you extend even in small ways,” she said.
Following her return, Basil announced plans to intensify her advocacy. She is the founder of the Reach Moms Initiative, an organisation focused on improving access to maternal healthcare for women in underserved communities.
She also identified education as another key area of interest, particularly for children affected by limited access to resources.
Basil encouraged young Nigerian women to pursue their dreams with confidence and intention.
“Never doubt yourself. Be intentional. If you can think it, you can achieve it,” she said.
She concluded by stating that her goal is to create a lasting impact that extends beyond her reign as Miss Universe Nigeria.
