Nigerian rapper Mr Real has publicly apologised to music star D’banj over remarks he made concerning the Creative, Reality, Entertainment, Arts and Music (CREAM) platform.
The controversy began after Mr Real claimed that the CREAM platform could not afford to offer him a ₦20 million ambassadorial deal, a statement that triggered backlash across social media and within the music industry.
Following the comments, D’banj’s legal counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, filed a petition alleging criminal defamation and sought a criminal summons against the rapper. A court subsequently ordered Mr Real to appear on January 19 and issued an injunction restraining him from making further public statements about D’banj pending the determination of the case.
In an apology video shared on Instagram, Mr Real admitted that his comments stemmed from a misunderstanding and acknowledged D’banj’s influence on his personal life and career.
“This video is an apology to my boss, D’banj,” he said. “I misunderstood and misinterpreted some things concerning the CREAM platform, and I want to sincerely say I am very sorry.”
He continued by expressing gratitude and respect for the veteran musician.
“D’banj, you have played a big role in my life and career. You are like a father and mentor to me. I am truly sorry, and I ask for your forgiveness,” he said.
Mr Real also pledged to fully comply with the ongoing legal process and confirmed that he had withdrawn his earlier statements.
“I promise to comply with the legal process and give my full support and cooperation. I remain loyal to you,” he added.
The rapper further stated that he would refrain from making any additional public comments on the matter, opting instead to resolve the issue privately while upholding professionalism within the industry.
D’banj’s CREAM Platform has been involved in several initiatives aimed at supporting Nigeria’s creative sector, including a partnership with the African Export-Import Bank to provide funding and development opportunities for creatives.
