The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of popular Nigerian singer Destiny Boy, whose real name is Adesina Afeez.
In a statement obtained by Punch Online on Monday, the police confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for comprehensive investigation.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said one suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue.
“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy,” the statement read.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.”
News of Destiny Boy’s death broke on Sunday after disturbing videos showing his body being conveyed to a mortuary circulated widely on social media, triggering grief, shock and speculation about the cause of death.
In response to the speculation, an unidentified associate of the late singer later released a video claiming that Destiny Boy had been battling a private health challenge prior to his death.
“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death,” the associate said.
“Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it.”
Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy ventured into music at a young age and became popular for his Fuji-infused sound. He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for Fuji star Pasuma.
He rose to prominence in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which gained widespread attention online. He also released covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.
Some of his notable songs include Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey.
Destiny Boy and his partner Iremide welcomed their first child in November 2024.
Police authorities have said further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, while fans and colleagues continue to mourn the young artiste’s passing.
