Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season after being diagnosed with a serious knee injury, his club Werder Bremen has confirmed.
The Nigeria international has reportedly been dealing with the knee problem since last summer but continued to play through the discomfort until December, when the situation deteriorated and forced him to miss Bremen’s final two matches of the year.
Subsequent medical examinations revealed that Boniface had suffered damage to the knee cartilage, a condition that worsened over time.
Initially, the striker opted against immediate treatment, believing the issue would stabilise. However, by December, the cartilage damage had progressed to the point where he was no longer able to continue playing.
Following the first diagnosis, Boniface was advised to undergo surgery immediately. He instead sought a second opinion and travelled to Austria after the Christmas break for further specialist consultation. The appointment, originally scheduled for January 7, was delayed by one day due to adverse weather conditions.
After further evaluation, specialists confirmed that surgery was unavoidable and would require an extended recovery period.
Werder Bremen have confirmed that Boniface will undergo surgery in the coming days, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the current season. While the club did not provide a specific recovery timeline, it indicated that rehabilitation would extend beyond the 2025/26 campaign.
The development represents a major setback for both Werder Bremen and the Super Eagles, with Boniface expected to miss the rest of the domestic season and any international engagements during this period.
Attention now turns to the striker’s long-term recovery, as he begins a lengthy rehabilitation process with the aim of returning to full fitness ahead of the next campaign.
