Former Big Brother Naija housemate and comedian DeeOne has publicly criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, questioning his approach to funding political campaigns.
In a viral Instagram video posted on Saturday, DeeOne reacted to the emergence of the City Boy Movement, a political support group backing President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027. The movement was reportedly established by the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, and is said to have attracted some former supporters of Peter Obi as coordinators and directors across several South-East states.
Reacting to the development, DeeOne urged Obi to “step up his game” by being more willing to spend money on his political ambition. He criticised Obi’s popular slogan, “We no dey give shishi,” arguing that sympathy votes alone would not be enough to secure victory in 2027.
According to the comedian, some Labour Party agents during the 2023 election allegedly lacked basic provisions such as food and water at polling units, claiming that in some instances, agents from other political parties provided assistance.
“You cannot win presidential election with sympathy votes,” DeeOne said in the video. “If Mr Peter Obi does not have his own money to spend on his ambition, then he should call on his followers to donate and give account of how he spent the money.”
He maintained that offering such criticism does not equate to opposition, but rather reflects a desire to see Obi better prepared for future elections.
The remarks have since sparked debate online, with supporters and critics weighing in on the role of campaign financing in Nigeria’s electoral process.
