Bayo Onanuga, Amaechi Clash Over Alleged Tax Law

Rotimi Amaechi

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has accused former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi of spreading what he described as “egregious lies” about a purported tax law.

Onanuga made the allegation in a post on his X handle while reacting to a viral video in which Amaechi spoke about the potential impact of a tax policy he claimed would be implemented after the next general election.

In the video, Amaechi warned that the alleged tax measure, if introduced following an electoral victory by the All Progressives Congress (APC), could significantly affect businesses and everyday life. He claimed that under the proposed law, 25 percent would automatically be deducted from certain transactions, with landlords and service providers likely to pass on the additional costs to consumers.

Amaechi also questioned why President Bola Tinubu had not implemented the measure ahead of the election, suggesting it was being delayed to avoid voter backlash. He urged citizens to actively participate in the electoral process, stating that the issue would have far-reaching consequences for families and livelihoods.

Reacting, Onanuga dismissed the claims, accusing the former Rivers State governor of misleading Nigerians about the contents of the Tax Act.

“Rotimi Amaechi caught spreading egregious lies about the Tax Act. The former minister, governor has really slipped so low misleading people about the law,” he wrote.

He further questioned whether the alleged misinformation signaled a campaign strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
