Billboard Sparks Outrage After Labeling Rema a “One-Hit Wonder”

Rema

American entertainment magazine Billboard has come under heavy criticism after referring to Nigerian superstar Rema as a “one-hit wonder.”

On February 16, 2026, the publication reshared an article from its June 2025 chart report, ranking Rema at number six on its list of the “25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century.” The classification was based on his global smash Calm Down, particularly the remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez.

Billboard argued that although Calm Down achieved significant success on the Billboard Hot 100, Rema has not returned to that specific chart since — despite recording six top-10 entries on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart through June 7, 2025.

The resurfaced post quickly ignited backlash across social media, with many fans describing the label as dismissive of Rema’s wider influence and body of work.

One user, @flourish_empire, wrote:
“What kind of downplay is that? All Rema songs are hit back to back.”

Another, @MikeAgrow, argued that U.S. chart performance does not define global impact:
“Rema has been dropping consistent bangers, selling out arenas, and putting Afrobeats on the map worldwide. One song on their chart doesn’t erase all that. Call it what it is.”

Meanwhile, @gtm_gtel accused the magazine of undermining African artists, stating:
“They try to kill his confidence but so bad. Billboard can’t tell Africans how to do their thing. Their rate is of no use.”

Supporters of the “Ozeba” singer noted that beyond Calm Down, Rema has achieved substantial international milestones, including charting albums, sold-out tours, and multiple award nominations that extend beyond a single record.

As of press time, Rema has not publicly responded to the controversy. The debate, however, has reignited broader conversations about how global success is measured — and whether Western chart metrics fully capture the global impact of Afrobeats artists.
