First U.S. Troops Land in Nigeria for Counterterrorism Support Mission

Ukrainian soldiers refuse a Russian army ultimatum to surrender their arms and will fight to the death in the city of Mariupol, which is surrounded by Russian troops

The first group of United States military personnel has arrived in Nigeria, marking the start of a planned deployment of about 200 American intelligence analysts, advisers, and trainers to assist Nigerian security forces in counterterrorism efforts.

A U.S. military aircraft reportedly touched down in Maiduguri on Thursday night, with roughly 100 personnel in the initial wave. Additional flights carrying personnel and equipment are expected in the coming weeks.

Noncombat Advisory Role

According to Nigerian defence spokesman Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, the U.S. troops will operate strictly in a noncombat capacity.

“These personnel do not serve in a combat capacity and will not assume a direct operational role. Nigerian forces retain full command authority, make all operational decisions, and will lead all missions on Nigerian sovereign territory.”

A U.S. Defence Department official also confirmed that the American personnel will primarily function from command posts, focusing on intelligence analysis, advisory support, and training.

Targeted Counterterrorism Focus

The mission follows recommendations from a joint U.S.–Nigeria working group and aims to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to respond to insurgent threats.

Operations are expected to focus on northern states impacted by jihadist violence, particularly areas affected by Boko Haram, as well as parts of the Middle Belt where attacks on Christian communities have been widespread.

Officials indicated that protecting vulnerable civilian populations is one of the objectives of the enhanced cooperation.

Strategic Context

Nigeria has battled insurgency and extremist violence for over a decade, with security operations concentrated in the North-East, especially around Borno State, where Maiduguri serves as a major military hub.

This deployment signals deeper bilateral security collaboration but maintains Nigeria’s full operational control, with U.S. forces providing technical expertise rather than direct battlefield engagement.

Further details on deployment locations, mission duration, and the scope of intelligence cooperation have not yet been publicly disclosed.
